Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Only death or repayment will fulfill the obligations. Only then will the beads disappear.

Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer to make it happen. He’s a man who can get you anything you want… at a price. And everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects.

But for one of his clients, he’s never asked for repayment. Not until now. When Callie finds the fae king of the night in her room, a grin on his lips and a twinkle in his eye, she knows things are about to change. At first it’s just a chaste kiss—a single bead’s worth—and a promise for more.

For the Bargainer, it’s more than just a matter of rekindling an old romance. Something is happening in the Otherworld. Fae warriors are going missing one by one. Only the women are returned, each in a glass casket, a child clutched to their breast. And then there are the whispers among the slaves, whispers of an evil that’s been awoken.

If the Bargainer has any hope to save his people, he’ll need the help of the siren he spurned long ago. Only, his foe has a taste for exotic creatures, and Callie just happens to be one.

Desmond Flynn = Goodbye Ovaries. 👋🏼

Last March I was in a huge mood for a fantasy / paranormal romance. Unfortunately this horrible reading slump hit me and it took time finishing the book. Also the sequel for Pestilence is coming this year and I want to condition myself in this genre. So while waiting, this is my distraction.

Rhapsodic is a great first installment int he series and is written alternately in past and present day. Seven years ago, a 16 year old siren Callypso / Callie Lillis made a deal with Desmond Flynn. He’s The Bargainer, The King of Fae and one of the most wanted in the Supernatural world. One bead per deal led to multiple beads puts herself in danger. The Bargainer doesn’t take debts lightly and soon he’ll collect it. I was nervous for Callie because she’s a minor and I’m glad Desmond didn’t take advantage of her situation. The friendship between them blossomed and he became her protector.

Callie fell in love with him but felt betrayed when he left. She doesn’t know his reason and was disheartened. After 7 years not seeing each other, he returns in her life and starts collecting debts, finishing what they’ve started. She’s still hurt by his disappearance and we all know Desmond owns her heart.

Desmond and Callie’s relationship oozed with a heart-melting chemistry. It’s so palpable and I’m here chilling on the edge of my seat. This is such a slow burn second chance romance and I AM LIVING FOR THESE TWO’S ROMANCE. My golly. They really had me waiting for them to make it official and there was a lot coming as we’re introduced in their world. It’s minimal but I am sure the sequel has a lot to showcase. I enjoyed them going into mission but I wish there’s more action and less sexy times just to balance the adventure and the romance.

Overall, it’s a solid beginning and I really like it. I think fans of ACOTAR will enjoy this book too. If you love New Adult Fantasy / Paranormal Romance, this one is for you.
