A series of chance encounters leads to a sizzling new romance from the New York Times bestselling author of the On Dublin Street series.
The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was–until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.
When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her….
Thank you Berkley for providing an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Whenever my favorite author has an upcoming book AND it has my favorite trope, SIGN ME UP. Samantha Young greatly delivers a classic enemies-to-lovers romance in her latest novel Fight or Flight. The story is slow burn yet so entertaining and you just can’t help devouring it.
The story is about a classy and sassy interior designer, Ava Breevort whose flight has been delayed meets a Scottish arrogant guy, Caleb Scott. There is an altercation between them and these two despise each other in the beginning. Their witty exchange of banters are amusing and hilarious. It’s fated they sit next to each other having the same flight destination.
The sexual tension is palpable and off the charts! It took a while when Ava and Caleb became an official couple and it’s wonderfully built up. I enjoyed majority of the moments especially about their pasts.. Both characters are likable have great character developments but for me, Ava stands out more she’s a feisty heroine but have zero tolerance bullshit. I want to cheer her whenever she calls out Caleb’s rudeness. There’s more to her than just a pretty face. She’s a woman with substance. Intelligent and refined.
If you combine Caine Carraway from Hero Braden Carmichael from On Dublin Street, we have Caleb Scott. I think it’ll be more interesting if we have Caleb’s point of view, just to see his impressions on Ava. Getting to know him more explains his arrogance and impoliteness towards everyone. Is he a redeemable hero? Yes. He sorted out himself before he realize that he loves Ava.
The book isn’t purely romance. It’s also about self-acceptance, family, grief and friendship. Family doesn’t have to be blood related and I’m glad for Ava’s friendship with Harper. What they have is beautiful and it’ll be treasured forever. They’d been through a lot of good and bad times but no matter what happens, they’ll have each other’s back.
Fight or Flight is a delightful read. It’s better you know less about the book and just let the plot twists take over. It’s a balance between fluff and seriousness, I really like it. If you enjoy enemies-to-lovers romance, I recommend this book.
Is it possible Jamie and Harper will have their own story? I am crossing my fingers they’ll have. After reading the last chapters, there’s more story to tell about them. I’m lowkey curious and fangirling. 💗
