Leave it to the heroes to save the world–villains just want to rule the world.

In this unique YA anthology, thirteen acclaimed, bestselling authors team up with thirteen influential BookTubers to reimagine fairy tales from the oft-misunderstood villains’ points of view.

These fractured, unconventional spins on classics like “Medusa,” Sherlock Holmes, and “Jack and the Beanstalk” provide a behind-the-curtain look at villains’ acts of vengeance, defiance, and rage–and the pain, heartbreak, and sorrow that spurned them on. No fairy tale will ever seem quite the same again!

My Review:

Because You Love to Hate Me is a collection of short villain stories where authors are paired up with booktubers/bloggers for prompts. Most of the authors here are new to me except Nicola Yoon and it gives me an idea which writing style I prefer. Ameriie wrote a solid introduction and as for the stories, majority of them are a miss and okay-ish and only five stood out in my opinion.

The Blood of Imuriv – Renee Adieh | Prompt by: Christine Riccio
– Props to Renee Adieh’s descriptive setting and the prompt is clever. The story was okay. It’s a little boring and the villain is too weak for my taste
Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Jack – Ameriie | Prompt by: Tina Burke
– I’m just in a few pages and I’m drawn on this Jack and the Beanstalk inspired story. However, I wasn’t familiar with the tyrant. The prompt was a great combination and I really enjoyed the story. The execution is brilliant and wicked.
Rating: 4/5 stars

Gwen and Art and Lance – Soman Chainani | Prompt by: Samantha Lane
– Damn this one is disappointing! I love the prompt (Modern King Arthur and Hades / Persephone = KICKASS PROMPT) but the story turned out cheesy. I didn’t like it.
Rating: 1.5/5 stars

Shirley & Jim – Susan Dennard | Prompt by: Sasha Alsberg
– Sad to say it didn’t give me a slightest villain vibe. MEH
Rating: 1/5 stars

The Blessing of Little Wants – Sarah Enni | Prompt by: Sophia Lee
– Interesting prompt but the story was so confusing. Someone enlighten me on this.
Rating: 1/5 stars

The Sea Witch – Marissa Meyer | Prompt by: Zoë Herdt
– The story was inspired from The Little Mermaid. It’s a mildly dark tale and I’m hooked with the story. A mermaid banished by her own kind and deceived by a human she fell for then turned into a sea witch. Too bad this is short. I want more!
Rating: 4.5/ 5 stars

Beautiful Venom – Cindy Pon | Prompt by: Benjamin Alderson
– I’m sold it’s a Medusa inspired story and more sold when Cindy Pon turned it into an Asian version. By the way, I really like her writing style. It’s well detailed.
Rating: 4.5 / 5 stars

Death Knell – Victoria Schwab | Prompt by: Jesse George
– Out of the tales, this is my most favorite. It has a great concept and Victoria Schwab delivered it amazingly. I wish this one is a full length novel.
Rating: 5/5 stars

Marigold – Samantha Shannon | Prompt by: Regan Perusse
– The story was okay. I’ve got to admit, I forced myself to finish this one. I almost fell asleep.
Rating: 2/5 stars

You, You, It’s all about You – Adam Silvera | Prompt by: Catriona Feeney
– I like the story –it has a Harley Quinn and Joker vibe but something was missing on it.
Rating: 3/5

Julian Breaks Every Rule – Andrew Smith | Prompt by: Raeleen Lemay
– Yes to psychopath story but I want it darker and creepy. The story was lighthearted and the writing style wasn’t my cup of tea.
Rating: 3 / 5 stars

Indigo and Shade – April Genevieve Tucholke | Prompt by: Whitney Atkinson
– I like Beauty and the Beast inspired story but this one was ended so fast. I know this is supposed to be a short story but I guess I want at least 5 more pages.
Rating: 2.5 / 5 stars

Sera – Nicola Yoon | Prompt by: Steph Sinclair and Kat Kennedy
– Badass. I didn’t expect to enjoy a gender flipped God of War and it’s remarkable. This is a proof Nicola Yoon can write both heartfelt contemporaries and edgy, vicious tales.
Rating: 4.5 /5 stars
