I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist.
My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.
Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me.
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.
My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.
In my city.
The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.
We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.
***Corrupt can be read as a stand-alone. No cliffhanger.
Whoa. I’m surprised Penelope Douglas goes on a darker side. You might want to brace yourself on Corrupt because the story is very intense, suspenseful and thrilling. It’s one hell of a ride and there are moments in this book put me out of my comfort zone.
Michael Crist is a popular basketball player and one of the Thunder Bay’s Four Horsemen along with Kai Mori, Damon Torrance, and Will Grayson III. They are came from wealthy families and have known each other for years but feel trapped on the expectations set on them. They do whatever they want and pull pranks as means of rebellion. These guys are intimidating. They have the good looks, attitude, power and fortune. No one ever dares to mess with them and if so, most likely you’ll lose the battle.Three years ago, something happened on Devil’s Night which put Kai, Damon and Will in prison and Erika Fane is to blame. Now they’re free, the plan is set in motion and they’re going to give Erika’s worst nightmare.
Erika / Rika Fane has been in love with Michael Crist for years. She dated his younger brother, Trevor but her heart still belongs to Michael. When she moved to Meridian City for college, she stays on Delcour– an apartment building owned by the Crists and where Michael is currently residing. Was it coincidence? Definitely not.She sensed this is planned and something is wrong. She wants to find out the reason why The Four Horsemen are furious to her. It’s a dangerous game of 4 versus 1 and if they think she’s going to surrender, they better think twice.
I don’t condone any of The Four Horsemen’s action as they continuously antagonizing Rika. They are a bunch of bullies. I’m so mad at these motherchucking a-holes! You’re going to hate them but it will make you curious what led them to be angry. You’ll get to read the past and the present and it’s up to you to make guesses. The pacing was gradual but my curiosity kept me going. Holy shit, I was on the edge of my seat and every chapter makes me nervous for Rika.
The plot twist was great but I saw it coming by Chapter 11. I trusted my instinct they’re all mislead and I was right. However, I was caught off guard with one scene that my eyes bulged *ehem. Sauna*. I was like “OMG. Penelope Douglas just DIDN’T write that. WTF WHAT.” Not my first time to read that kind scene but I really just didn’t expect that one at all. It was well played!
All the characters are impressive especially Rika. It takes so much courage to fight back the Four Horsemen. She’s got the scratch and claws to fight back. She’s so daring, fiery and badass. She doesn’t tolerate their bullshit antics. She knows how to defend herself and always rise up to their challenge. Michael is one character you’ll grow to hate and love. It takes patience to understand him. He’s a complex anti-hero. I may have hate him in the beginning but his character is redeemable. The chemistry and sexual tension between Rika and Michael are HOT. Chili HOT. 🔥🌶 Penelope Douglas is so good at writing sexy scenes and angst!
Overall, I really like the story. It’s gripping and unputdownable. I will give it 4 stars because I’m a little underwhelmed with the epilogue. Still, it’s a great start for this romantic suspense series. I think it’s best to dive into this book blind. Out of the Four Horsemen, I’m most intrigued with Kai Mori. I WANT TO READ HIS BOOK AND FIND OUT HIS LOVE LIFE.
