Summary (Goodreads):

Once the most feared member of an Italian Mafia crime family, Gabriel Moretti returns to New York at the request of his mentor, Russian crime boss Vasily Tarasov. Vasily needs someone he can trust in Seattle to protect his estranged daughter, Eva Jacobs, while he avenges the murder of the young woman’s mother. Gabriel is unstoppable in a fight, whether he’s using fists, blades, or bullets; but innocent, onyx-haired Eva may just be the most dangerous—and beautiful—thing he’s come up against.

Intense sparks fly between the two, tempting Gabriel to mix business with pleasure while in the Emerald City. But once word gets around that Gabriel has shown up in New York, Stefano—his vengeful brother and the de facto head of the family—decides that Eva is the key to ending the feud between them…permanently.

In this pulse-pounding romantic thriller set against the backdrop of New York City’s storied underworld, loyalties will be tested, secrets will be told, and mob justice will be served.

Vasily Tarasov, a Russian Mafia leader gave his trust to Gabriel Moretti in protecting his only daughter, Evangeline Jacobs while he hunts down her mother’s murderer. Gabriel assured he’ll fulfill his duty and do what it takes to keep her safe from the enemies. Upon seeing her picture, it ‘s challenging for him to control his feelings. Falling for her isn’t a good idea when his brother, Stefano Moretti seeks vendetta against him. Once he knew his association to Eva, she could be the next target.

Eva is a beautiful, innocent, independent and smart woman. Now that her mother’s gone, she feels lonely and wonders about the father she never met. When she met Gabriel, a connection sparks between them. He’s an enigma and she wants to get to know him more.

Books written in third person can be a hit or miss to me. It took me a while to get into it as nothing much piqued my interest and there are many characters introduced all at once which confused me at times. As for the romance, I wasn’t sold by it because it’s very insta-love. Gabriel just saw her picture and he wants to stake claim already? Just no. As a hitman, his character didn’t stood out for me. Also, the story as a whole lacked suspense and thrill as it has more romance than mafia aspects. I wish there’s more action and I want to see more rivalries.

This is an okay book, quite a miss but I’ll give this series another chance and crossing my fingers it gets better. I’m curious for the next one because it’s Vincente Romani’s story. I think he’s the only one I find interesting… so far.
