Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs Series.
As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.
Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.
Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.
That’s definitely not part of the plan.
Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.
But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits” begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.
Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely.
What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?
The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.
So glad to finally get into The Legal Briefs series. I’ve been meaning to read this for a long time but didn’t have a chance. Overruled is about Stanton Shaw and Sofia Santos, both are bright lawyers working in a law firm and they are friends with benefits.
One day, Stanton received a wedding invitation from his High School lover and mother of his child, Jenny Monroe. Jenny got pregnant when he’s about to leave Sunshine, Mississippi to pursue Law studies. They became good parents to Presley, their daughter. Jenny encourage him to pursue his dreams to become a lawyer instead of being stuck in a small town and they have an agreement to have an open relationship. He decided to go home and asked Sofia to accompany him in the hopes Jenny will change her mind.
Sofia is a hardworking woman who doesn’t have time to have relationships. She’s okay with the arrangement she has with Stanton and when he needs help, she doesn’t hesitate to help him. Her feelings for him developed as she gets to spend more time with him. They have an intense sexual tension and chemistry but is he capable of loving her just like Jenny? Is he willing to go beyond their arrangement?
I like Overruled because of the angst and humor. There are times it made me laugh and I really enjoy the little drama. However, Stanton was a let down. He may be charming, sexy and intelligent in the work field, but he’s an idiot for handling his relationships. He left the ladies hanging and I really feel bad for both of them. Jenny waited so long for him but he didn’t come back for her, I understand why she moved on from him and I’m glad she ended up with a guy who will cherish her. As for Sofia, she deserves to be treated better than this. It’s obvious she loved him and I’m frustrated Stanton didn’t see that earlier. He. Is. So. Damn. Blind.
It’s still a good start despite of my issues with the male lead. I’m going to continue the series and hopefully it gets better. P.S. It’s nice to see Drew Evans here 😉 I miss that swoon worthy man. ;)))
