Summary (Goodreads):

Once upon a time, there was a guy who got so fed up with life that he resorted to murder and mayhem just to feel alive.

Lorenzo Gambini is bored. So fucking bored. Most people either annoy him or avoid him, afraid to face him. Figuratively. Literally. With his face partially disfigured, scarred, he looks every bit the monster the stories make him out to be: the notorious menace they call Scar. They say he’s a sociopath. Maybe he’s a psychopath. Whatever path he’s on, people tend to stay far away from it.

Until one day, a young woman bumps right into him–a woman just as fed up with life, but for much different reasons. With a Scarlet Letter inked on her wrist and secrets buried deep in her soul, Morgan Myers is running from something… or maybe somebody. Lorenzo isn’t quite sure.

You can bet your ass he’s going to figure it out, though.

I want to thank Hulya (click her name to read fab review) for recommending this book to me!

Lorenzo “Scar” Gambini was first introduced in the final book of Monster in His Eyes trilogy as a secondary character. He and Ignazio Vitale are sort of frenemies, it’s difficult to explain their relationship without spoiling but they remained in good terms. I’m intrigued by his character and I saw a lot of potential that this guy should have his own story. When I heard he’ll have one, I was like: “OH YES PLEASE! GIVE ME LORENZO GAMBINI!”

Lorenzo is the current NY Mafia Boss, he has a reputation of being merciless and he’s an amazing anti-hero. He’s sexy, cocky, intimidating, badass, temperamental with a dark sense of humor. He’s quite insane and tactless most of the time. Cowardice is not in his vocabulary, he can face anyone without fear even the most notorious boss in the world. Is he afraid of dying? Definitely NOT. He values loyalty and isn’t lenient on traitors or those people who disrespects him. Anyone who steps out out the line, he’ll pull out his gun and shoot you without remorse or throw a grenade like it’s a confetti and BAM! BYE BYE. The scar on his face is a reminder of his gruesome past and his name lived up to it. Most people are scared by him… well except one.

Who would have thought his life will be more interesting when he stumbled on a woman who stole his wallet. He tracked down this beautiful woman and instead of killing her, he gave her a second chance which is very unusual for him. He’s intrigued by her sass and fearlessness. He tolerates it though they don’t really get along at first. As he get to know her story, they’re quite similar on harsh experiences. Her tattoo says a lot and he’s determined to figure out its meaning. It’s his specialty to give people nicknames and he calls her Scarlet.

Morgan “Scarlet” Myers is a resilient, witty and dauntless woman. She lived a miserable life in the hands of the Russian Mafia for years. She escaped and been running since. She works as a stripper to support herself and has a mission to gather information the Russians possessed that’s rightfully hers. Just like Scar she knows what it’s like fighting for survival. Even he’s being an asshole to her, maybe Lorenzo is her only chance who can help her against the Russians.

I have so much love for this book. Lorenzo and Morgan are both incredible. Their characters are well developed and I love the slow burn romance between them. I’m so amused when they exchange banters and sarcastic comments. They really pushed each other’s buttons to the limits and it’s so hilarious! The chemistry between these two? SCREW THE SCALE. THEY BROKE IT. The sex scenes are blazing hot and intense. I seriously love Scar and Scarlet!

The plot is engaging and well written. I love it’s in dual perspective… with an extra one. Yes, there’s an extra perspective that blindsided me. That ending shook me and that revelation of the mysterious POV surprised me. It’s bloody brilliant. HANDS DOWN. If you haven’t read this book and you love mafia books, READ IT ASAP.

(Note: It’s not prerequisite to read Monster in His Eyes trilogy. This duet will not give you any spoilers on the other series.)
